Check Out 2016 Top 500 Universities In The World, Nigerian Universities That Made The List

The 2016 top 500 Universities in the world have been released by ShanghaiRanking consultancy. The ranking is said to be based on transparent methodology and third-party data.

It is, however, disappointing that no Nigerian university made the 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

The method used is based on the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of Highly Cited Researchers, the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance.”

Only four African universities made the list while no Nigerian university made the list. African countries that made the list include University of Cape Town, Witwatersrand University, Cairo University and Stellenbosch University.

Harvard University has been on top of the list for 14 years and this year made the number one position as usual.

According to ShanghaiRanking consultancy, there are “totally 9 universities breaking into the top 100 list in 2016, among which Tsinghua University, Peking University, Monash University, National University of Singapore, Mayo Medical School and the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center make their first appearance in the Top 100.”

This is also the first time universities from China and Singapore will make top 100 universities in the world.

In total, 27 universities have made it into the top 500 list for the first time while no Nigerian university has ever made the list or even made the list this year.
